The theme park is located on the grounds of a ruined gothic country house, formerly owned by Earls of Shrewsbury. The theme park has changed several hands, even as it evolved from a basic entertainment park into a full-fledged family entertainment centre revolving around more than 14 themes.
There are several theme rides for various age groups at Alton towers. Some of the major attractions include "Nemesis", an inverted roller coaster, "Oblivion" a vertical drop roller coaster, "Air", a flying roller coaster, the Flume and the Congo River rapids.
Several new themes are added to attract visitors and provide a great day out for families, the latest being the Sharkbait Reef. Entry is through tickets. The theme park also has family tickets and group discounts.
There is a heavy rush at Alton Towers during peak holiday periods. Account for serpentine queues during the peak vacation season like Easter. According to the park advisories, the best time to do these rides is early in the morning when there is not much rush.
Kiddie rides and shows are popular among children of smaller age groups. If you don't fancy the thrills, you can spend your time in the well-maintained gardens in the centre of the park. Alton Towers has also a number of fast food outlets and souvenir stalls that are stocked with theme merchandise. Keep some extra cash, especially if you are not carrying your lunch.

Alton Towers' celebrates Halloween as an annual event "Scarefest" that has a number of scare mazes. The most popular one is Terror of the Towers. This year's "Scarefest" will be held from 17 October to 1 November.
Alton Towers also has programmes for the Winter break. The resort park gets transformed into a Winter Wonderland during December and January. Visitors can enjoy rides to selected attractions in the park amid the mythical world of reindeers and Santa Claus. The winter themes are attractive for the Christmas Trees, fictional characters that come alive and pure and simple live entertainment.
