WHERE TO STAY
The question to answer is: do you want what's hot or what's haute? Your answer means East Berlin vs. West Berlin, respectively. While the money remains in West Berlin along with hotels like InterContinental or Swissotel, the most famous hotel in all of Germany is in East Berlin - Hotel Adlon Kempinski (think back to the Michael Jackson baby-dangling incident).
WHERE TO EAT
If you love flavor then Berlin is not your place but, given its continually expanding cosmopolitan flare, you can get anything from bratwurst (you're in Germany c'mon) to sushi to burgers, and it would be uncivilized to wash it down with anything other than beer...again, you're in Germany!. The one must-do however, is a small pizza shop called Pizza Loona (Turkish-owned) at Oderbergerstr. (417 17960). Other than pizza in Rome, you won't find fresher, better seasoned thin crust pizza - the Magherita is a mere 3.50 euro!!
WHERE TO SHOP
You can walk along Friedrichstr. to get your fill of Escada, Hermes, Hugo BOSS, and the likes - or you can head for Quartier 206, also on Friedrichstr., and indulge in lesser known designers. You won't know the names but, within six months of bringing it home, you're guaranteed to see it in some US magazine being profiled as the 'latest and greatest'.
Don't leave without a photo of the only remaining physical reminder of Cold War Berlin....the Berliner Mauer which runs along Bernauer StraBe!
