One of the most famous rivers of Africa, the Gambia River is the country's major irrigation source as it runs right through the mainland and ends at the Atlantic Ocean. Originally under British Rule, the Republic of Gambia got its independence in the year 1965 and ever since then, holiday goers around the world have come to Gambia to experience a relaxing and fun holiday.

What makes Gambia an ideal holiday destination is its subtropical climate. It has both hot and cool seasons but hot and humid weather dominate the weather pattern and June to October are the months when the rain arrives. What can discourage holiday goers from enjoying a Gambian holiday is that during the height of summer, temperatures can touch 43 degrees centigrade in the mainland. On the other hand, the cool season starts in November and runs till May. The temperatures are around 16 degrees centigrade and the climate is dry.

Apart from having a historical and natural heritage to envy, Gambia also has fabulous beaches, ancient forts, national parks, museums, wildlife and ancient ruins that will entertain any kind of holiday goer. A beach holiday in Gambia is especially fun since hardly any of the beaches are crowded. However the best beaches are part of the various holiday resorts that are here. A word of advice to holiday goers - Make sure you dress decently as Gambia is a Muslim country and you could be hurting people's sentiments in western beach wear.

The most famous holiday attraction in Gambia is Cape Point due to the many golden sand beaches it possesses. The Sun Beach Hotel at Cape Point has many water sports activities like canoeing, sailing, jet skiing and windsurfing.

A bird lover's paradise, Gambia entertains over 500 different bird species each year making it the perfect holiday for bird enthusiasts. This is truly remarkable considering Gambia's size.
The capital of Gambia, Banjul has many shops and markets that will attract those interested in village handicrafts. One market holiday goers must visit is the Albert Market. Also, Banjul has the Gambian National Museum that houses many artifacts and texts that give its visitors an insight into African culture before and after the British rule.

Another place that might interest tourists is Brikama's woodcarving centre. All information related to woodcarving in Gambia can be seen and if you are lucky, you might get to see skilful craftsman doing what they do best - woodcarving. To take a souvenir back home, make sure you visit this place.

Holiday goers must also visit Fort Bullen, a British fort that has recently been recognized as a UNESCO 'World Heritage Site'. It was built in the year 1926 to protect the Gambia River as it was a key trading route then.
